A poll conducted last week for Matt Mead’s gubernatorial campaign shows Mead and Rita Meyer leading the Republican primary race. The internal poll, conducted July 25-26 and released unsolicited by the Mead campaign last week, also found that 71 percent of Wyoming voters feel the state is headed in the right direction. The survey found Mead, a former U.S. attorney, leading the seven-way GOP primary race with 26 percent support. Meyer, the current state auditor, had 22 percent – though her 4-point deficit was within the poll’s +/- 4.9 percent margin of error. Former state legislator and state Department of Agriculture Director Ron Micheli had 18 percent. House Speaker Colin Simpson followed with 16 percent of the vote. Three other candidates, Alan Kousoulos, Tom Ubben, and John Self, received only marginal support. Nineteen percent of voters were undecided. Mead’s poll also found that 51 percent of likely GOP voters think jobs and the economy are the number-one issues facing the state today. A Casper Star-Tribune poll taken last week also showed Mead and Meyer leading the GOP field with 27 percent and 24 percent, respectively. The Star-Tribune poll also found that 60 percent of likely GOP feel Wyoming is on the right track. Wes Anderson of OnMessage, Inc, the Republican polling firm that conducted the survey, said in a memo to the Mead campaign that the results showed that “it now comes down to who runs the better campaign and gets their message out more effectively to the 19% of voters who are still undecided.” Mead had 93-percent name recognition; his favorable and unfavorable ratings were 57 percent and 6 percent, respectively. That, Anderson said in the memo, means Mead is “well-positioned” to go after the remaining undecided voters in the race. Micheli’s campaign said in a statement that they believe Mead’s poll is accurate and is more reflective of the true state of the race than the Star-Tribune poll. “(Mead’s) results showed a much tighter race between Ron Micheli, Matt Mead, Rita Meyer, and Colin Simpson - with Ron Micheli receiving 18% of the vote,” Micheli’s campaign said in a statement. “We agree more with these numbers and their methodology seems to be more sound.” Micheli's campaign declined to release their own internal poll numbers. Mead’s poll was conducted via live telephone interviews among 400 likely Republican primary voters in Wyoming. CORRECTION: An earlier version of this blog post stated in error that 71 percent of registered Republicans feel the state's headed in the right direction. 71 percent of Wyoming voters, as a whole, feel that way; only 63 percent of Republicans agree with that.
