Van Pelt, Russillo clear the air

The folks at the Scott Van Pelt Show emailed me yesterday hoping to clear the air on their feelings about Wyoming. I wrote a story and blog post earlier this week discussing how the show on ESPN Radio has given Wyoming some national publicity by randomly discussing backup quarterback Dax Crum and showing UW's helmet on their set. UW starting quarterback Austyn Carta-Samuels took some exception to the attention, discussing the possibility that the hosts, Scott Van Pelt and Ryen Russillo, make them into a running punch line. I should have stated that Carta-Samuels is the only player I have spoken to thus far that felt that way, but as the starting quarterback and captain, that opinion looms pretty large. Here are the thoughts of Russillo and Van Pelt from emails to me on the subject: From Russillo, who pointed out that the origin of the Dax Crum bit came when Crum was starting for UW two seasons ago: "At first I just thought it was a different name, his story was interesting and I was rooting for a comeback. So I started following him a little. ... "I have never had the intention of "making fun of the team" and feel terrible if the players feel that way. I know that Austyn is the starter and he had a great season, we like Wyoming.
"That's it. I don't know a ton about Wyoming football, I'd be lying if I said I did, but we kind of adopted the team. I love the helmet, I think you have a great coach, a lot of fans have told us that they love seeing the helmet on our set and I thought it would be cool to show some support for a program that doesn't get any national publicity."
From Van Pelt: "We have gotten a ton of love from
the Wyoming coaches, specifically Coach Christensen who sent a note that they seemingly enjoyed their status, along with Idaho, as the helmets on our desk during the show. ..." The irony here is, we KNOW who [Carta-Samuels] is. I watched him in several games last year and he (and the whole team) were great in the bowl win over Fresno." -------------------------------------------------------------------
I think it's clear that the show isn't out to disrespect Wyoming. I mostly wrote the story earlier this week to get Carta-Samuels' opinion out there and to see if any of you fans felt the same way.
I'm glad Van Pelt and Russillo emailed me their thoughts so we now have them out there. SVP also said that he is going to effort doing an interview with Carta-Samuels on his program so that once and for all, it can be shared with the nation that we do NOT view the Cowboys or Austyn as a punchline."
