Initial thoughts: Scrimmage 2
Posted by: ESchmoldt on August 17, 2010 at 2:25PM EST

Just back from Wyoming's second scrimmage and figured I'd put a few thoughts out there:

  • The offense was rather anemic to start the scrimmage again, but got better as it went along. Coach Dave Christensen quickly dispelled any negativity about the unit, pointing to late-scrimmage scores by the first-team offense. Still defense won 53-36.
  • Nice to see Marcell Gipson finish off the scrimmage with a pick six. Both he and his brother are having a solid, solid fall.
  • Right side of the offensive line appears completely up for grabs. True freshman Justin DiRe has swiped some first-team reps away from Josh Leonard while Jack Tennant, coming back from an injury, is going to have to beat out John Hutchins. Tennant worked as the second-team center today.
  • Jonathan Aiken is going to be a factor. I wrote about him working all the way up to a scholarship already in today's paper. "Slim," as his teammates call him, is a tall target that was thrown to all day today, including the biggest offensive play, a 48-yard touchdown pass from Dax Crum.
  • Brian Hendricks limped off the field about two-thirds of the way through the scrimmage with what Christensen described as a sprained ankle. You'll remember he missed the TCU game a year ago with a sprained ankle as well.
  • David Tooley, a wide receiver who left the team last week for personal reasons, was on the sideline on Tuesday and is back on the team. Interesting turn of events a couple of times in the last week.
  • Still really like what Patrick Mertens is doing at defensive tackle. I clearly didn't give him enough credit throughout spring and I'll call myself out for it.
  • Cowboys seemed to work quite a bit on special teams today with mixed results.
  • Eighteen days out, Christensen says his team is where he expected it to be.
